Lowe's Whirlpool Water Softener: Problems and Solutions 

 

Before we take a look at a few common problems and solutions, there are two things you need to know.

 

First, Lowe's and Whirlpool water softeners are the same products but go by different names. And second, WaterSmart technicians repair both Lowe's and Whirlpool water softeners and have extensive experience in this area. 

 

 

 

Problem #1 - No Power

 

A simple power outage can affect the operation of your water softener. Always check that your unit is functioning correctly after a power loss. 

 

In addition, if your power outlet is not working correctly, it can play havoc with your unit's regeneration cycle. 

 

If you suspect there may be a problem with your power outlet, test the outlet with an electrical outlet tester.

 

 

 

Problem #2 - Not Enough Salt

 

Open the lid of your Lowe's Whirlpool water softener and make sure that the salt level is at least 1/4 full.

 

It is recommended though to have it 3/4 full, so top it up if need be and initiate the regeneration cycle by locating the touch-hold pad and pressing until "recharge now" flashes in the display.

 

Allow a day or so for the soft water to flush through the water heater.

 

 

 

Problem #3 - Salt Bridges

 

Occasionally, a hard crust or "salt bridge" forms in the salt storage area, and underneath it is a mixture of salt water and empty space. When this happens, the salt will not dissolve in the water to make brine.

To check for a salt bridge, take a broom handle or something similar and carefully push it down into the salt. If the broom handle hits something hard (and it is not the floor or sides), you have a salt bridge.

 

To remove, carefully break the bridge with the broom handle while being careful not to pound or damage the inside walls of the unit.

 

If the salt bridge is difficult to break up, pour 1 gallon of warm (not hot) water into the tank to help dissolve the bridge.

Problem #4 - Leaky Softener Tank

 

This issue will be quite easy to identify, although a small leak may take time to reveal itself. 

 

Leaks are generally covered under your warranty, which for a Lowe's Whirlpool water softener includes two-year full parts and labour, three-year limited electronics, and ten-year limited on tanks and resin media.

Problem #5 - No Soft Water

 

There are two clear signs that your Lowe's Whirlpool water softener isn't giving off the desired effect.

 

According to WaterTech, you'll know your water is hard if you're seeing hard water spots and fighting scale and mineral buildup in your faucets and appliances. Also, your water simply won't feel soft; you may feel dry and itchy after a shower, or find suds aren't forming in the kitchen sink.

 

Unless you're a licensed plumber or have successfully tackled this issue in the past, it's probably best to contact a professional who deals with these issues on a daily basis in order to assess and would most fix it quickly and at a low cost.
